Book Review: The Attachment Bond

Attachment is often described as a process that acts like a blueprint for our relationships. What we learn in our first – and most formative – relationship becomes the basis for every subsequent relationship we have, and we either spend the rest of our lives enjoying the benefits of secure attachments, or trying to fill the holes in our insecure attachments.

In her new book, The Attachment Bond: Affectional Ties Across the Lifespan, Virginia M. Shiller, a licensed psychologist and assistant professor at Yale University Child Study Center explores the enduring emotional and relational patterns that influence us and are influenced by the world around us.

Like many clinicians, particularly those with a psychoanalytic background, Shiller was fascinated by the work of attachment theory pioneers Mary Ainsworth and John Bowlby. However, Shiller also realized that their work left out some very important variables such as the role of the father, the mother’s mental health and the quality of the marital relationship.

“Attuned, responsive mothers are most likely to be happy women who feel supported in their role. Women who wish to work outside the home but are unable for one reason or another to do so may well parent differently than women who choose to stay home,” writes Shiller.

How a mother parents a child, and how available and responsive she is to the child’s needs forms the basis for the attachment pattern that results. What the child takes away from this experience is a working model of relationships. Working models, Shiller writes, work outside of conscious awareness, and yet influence feelings, cognition, behavior, and attention and memory.

While attachment patterns were previously thought to be stable – that is, once they were developed they didn’t change – Shiller clarifies that, in fact, attachment patterns are much more fluid.

“Given the importance of the capacity for change, it is perhaps no surprise that children can change their attachment patterns if caregivers change their behavior,” writes Shilller.

In her review of several studies of children and the relationships they have with their teachers, Shiller found that children tended to elicit reactions from teachers that could perpetuate the non-optimal relationships they had with their parents. Yet, when careful interventions are made at this stage, children can make remarkable progress.

Shiller describes Tommy, an aggressive four-year-old who seemed to take pleasure in inflicting pain upon others, while also remaining out of reach to those around him. When his teachers carefully looked for opportunities to develop a relationship with him – even staying with him when he needed to be isolated from other children – in time, he developed a strong attachment to one teacher, while also making remarkable progress in all other relationships.

One feature that may be especially helpful to a child in developing a secure attachment pattern is his or her mother’s capacity for “reflective functioning.” Reflective functioning, which is the ability to look reflectively at one’s own mind, Shiller explains, seems to set the stage for a child to learn how to express and regulate emotions.

Without recognizing how one is interacting in relationships, a person is likely to misinterpret the intentions of others. Shiller cites the work of Mario Mikulincer, who showed that people with avoidant attachment patterns consistently attribute hostility to others’ benign behavior. The physiological result of this is that people who had less sensitive mothers also experience more stress-related arousal during conflict with their current romantic partners.

Attachment patterns also influence how we respond to our romantic partners. Secure partners are able to discuss their feelings in an open, contained, and coherent manner, whereas avoidant or anxious partners tend to either dismiss their relationship concerns, or become angry or confused about the relationship. Further, securely attached adults appear to handle stressful life events much more effectively.

In some cases, Shiller writes that marriage can offer a new caregiving environment, and one in which a secure partner can help an insecure one develop a greater sense of trust and stability within the relationship. And the more secure the relationship between partners, the more likely their children will develop secure attachment patterns.

“The relationship security in the parental state of mind and child attachment security appear to be a fairly universal phenomenon,” writes Shiller.

Because attachment patterns influence not just mental health, but also the relationships that we develop with our romantic partners and the ones we create with our children, it seems that every effort should be made to better understand them. The Attachment Bond offers perhaps the most informative summary to date of attachment theory, and its implications on the relational experiences that we carry throughout our lives.

Dating Multiple People: Why This Isn’t Bad, but Really Healthy!

Dating multiple people might have a negative connotation, but there is nothing negative about playing the field to make sure you know what you want.

I have a 13-year-old who just broke up with his first girlfriend. He is kind of a sensitive soul by nature, so I waited for the day with trepidation, thinking his whole world was going to fall apart. I found out about two weeks after they broke up. All he had to say about it was, “I am 13. Did you think I was going to marry her?” What my 13-year-old understands about dating multiple people, not many adults do.

The phrase dating multiple people sounds like you play people, or that you can’t commit. But, the reality is that once you are married, guess what? You are married. If you are young and way too attached to someone, it might be time to consider dating multiple people to find out if you found the right fit.

Why dating multiple people is essential to find the right fit for life

Just like dress shopping, you try on a lot of dresses to find the one that fits. It isn’t just about how you look in it. It is about how comfortable you are in it, how strong the material is, and whether it is your style or not. If you only try on one dress, how will you ever know if another one might have looked better?

#1 You only live once, YOLO. You only get one go around on this earth, or at least that is the most common belief. If you only date one person at a time you limit the amount of people that you get to know and have a good time with.

Stop trying so hard to find “the one” right away and play the field while you can. As long as you are honest, there is nothing wrong with living it up while you can. [Read: 15 ways to live life to the fullest]

#2 Comparison shopping is always the best. When you are with one person, there is no way to comparison shop. I know people aren’t commodities, or things you buy on the internet. But, just like shopping, if you can’t compare one thing to another, how are you supposed to know which is right for you?

When you date multiple people, you compare and contrast how they handle things, which you have more fun with, and which one you think about most of the time. Comparison shopping is essential for finding the best match.

#3 If you stick to one person, you might get stuck. Sometimes when you date only one person, there is a natural order to things. What I mean is that there are steps that you are expected to take.

One day you wake up, and you are to the point where you are serious and supposed to make the next move like move in or marriage. You haven’t even had the time to really think about what you are doing. Choosing someone for life shouldn’t be about making the next step because it is expected or what you are supposed to do. [Read: 9 relationship stages all couples have to go through]

#4 You are too young to get serious. If you are too young to be serious about getting serious, then only going out with one person might teach you about how to be monogamous. But, is now really the time for that?

Being young is about trial and error and finding out what you want and who you are. If you date the same person throughout your entire childhood, how do you know that there isn’t someone better suited out there that just might pass you by? Being young is about experimenting. Experiment the hell out of relationships while you have the chance.

#5 You aren’t sure what you want. If you don’t know what you want out of life or out of a relationship, you aren’t going to find out by staying serious with just one person. Look around and find out what you want out of life, and that is about exploring the many fish in the sea to find out which one you want to swim around with forever after.

#6 Your relationships always seem to get too close too fast. If you are the person who always has a boyfriend or a girlfriend, then there is a likelihood that you have a problem standing on your own two feet or being comfortable being alone.

When you date multiple people, you aren’t relying on someone to be your everything. You are your own strength, and the people you come to know are accessories—not your everything. Being monogamous doesn’t make you a better person morally all the time.

Sometimes it just makes you fearful of being alone and the unknown of not having someone to lean on. [Read: The 8 biggest signs you’re a real serial monogamist]

#7 You know in your heart you aren’t ready for a commitment. If you know that this is not the time in your life where you are ready to make a commitment for life, then don’t limit yourself to one person and one relationship. It isn’t fair for you to only be with one person if that is not what you want or are ready for.

And, it definitely isn’t fair to that other person if they think that you are and that is where y’all are headed.

#8 You don’t want to lead someone on. It is good to date multiple people so that the person you are with doesn’t think they are something more special than they are to you. All too often we keep someone around as a cushion until we find someone better and jump ship.

That isn’t fair to anyone. If you aren’t sure that the person you are currently with is the right one for you, dating multiple people lets them know they are free to do the same and tells them where your head is at. If they can’t take it, then they aren’t the one for you. [Read: Cushioning and why this dating tactic just makes you a jerk]

#9 You are at your sexual peak. If you are at your sexual peak, enjoy the ride. The valley isn’t as much fun. Being young is about exploration and memories for a lifetime. Involved in that is reckless abandonment *with a condom, of course*.

Don’t forego those fun times by getting too serious too fast. They won’t ever be back again. [Read: Why every girl needs to date more than just one guy until she gets serious]

#10 You just got out of a super bad relationship, don’t settle for a rebound. If you just got out of a bad relationship or a serious one that you thought was the one, don’t start looking for something serious to hop into. The rebound person is never the right one, and not dating multiple people after a bad breakup can have you making poor decisions that potentially alter the rest of your life. [Read: How to date multiple girls at once without being a douche]

Emotional heartbreak makes us do some pretty stupid things. Give yourself some time to heal before you get too serious again.

[Read: Should you settle for less when you can have much more?]

A serious relationship is something that there is always time for when you find the right one and the time is right. If that isn’t right now, then don’t try to convince yourself it is and enjoy dating multiple people.

Can One Save Your Relationship Alone?

In the early stages in a new relationship while you are discovering new things about your partner, many conflicts and disagreements will arise. These relationship teething problems must be addressed by both partners in a sensible way because if you think you can save a relationship alone you are sadly mistaken. As the relationship matures over time many issues can be resolved through compromise and by understanding that you both have different needs and ideas. Cultural differences between partners can make a relationship experiencing problems even more difficult, and can be a true test of how strong your relationship really is.

You may think you can save a relationship alone, but in reality both partners have to put in the necessary effort and discuss ways and methods that can be pursued to find solutions. In most cases both of you will rather try and save the relationship especially if you really love one another, so the answer to the question can I save the relationship alone or do I really need to, is clearly no! When both partners agree that the relationship is experiencing problems, then understanding what these issues are, and the reasons behind them is the first step. The comfort of knowing that you do not have to save the relationship alone makes looking for the solution a lot simpler because both of you will want to work the problems out together.

There are many different avenues that can be explored to save your relationship. The spark needs to be put back into your feelings and quality time spent with one another without outside influences is a good idea. A weekend away to somewhere special gives you the chance to renew your love and feelings towards each other and also discuss the problems that caused the misunderstandings. This alone time and knowing that you do not have to save the relationship alone will give you confidence that all is not lost. When you are relaxed in each others company, then discussing the problem you were facing becomes so much easier.

Getting together and assessing the status of your relationship is a very important answer to the question of can you save your relationship alone. Both of you will have made mistakes and the realization of what these are will give you time to reflect on methods and compromise to help avoid future problems that are similar in nature. Any guidance counselor will tell you that effective communication is the biggest pillar of strength in a relationship. Listening to your partner and understanding their needs leads to faith and trust. You can save a relationship alone or together but the sensible way is definitely doing it together. When both partners in a relationship cooperate then any problem seems a lot more manageable.

Singles Cruises Over 50 For The Young At Heart

Singles cruises over 50 can be the next exciting holidays for the elderly. What’s exciting about cruises is the amount of pampering that takes place. Seniors will notice that their entire meals are prepared for them, and they always have a warm comfortable bed inside their cabins. What could be a better way to spend a week or two of your retirement each year?

According to the American Association of Port Authorities, the average age of a cruise ship passenger is just over 50. In addition, the average cruise ship passenger will spend about $ 1,770 during a week cruise. With more and more seniors opting for adult-only packages, companies in the industry are accommodating them.

Singles cruises over 50 are sometimes best reserved as adults-only cruises. These are specialized cruises that do not allow children. These are away for some parents to get away from it all, or for seniors to hang out with other senior citizens in a childfree environment. These cruises also have more adult-themed activities that have something for the taste of every adult.

Sensible Tips for Singles Cruises over 50

Seniors Choose Their Cruising Lifestyle – Senior citizens can select the type of lifestyle they need during their time on a ship. Those who like to gamble will usually find casinos available. Bars are plentiful for those who like to drink, and cruises offer a wide variety of activities that can keep the most active seniors as busy as they need to be kept. The more activities that you participate in, you are more likely to meet other single seniors.

Ways to Prevent Getting an Illness – When you place a large group of people in a small space, there is a larger possibility that people can pass along different viruses. Cruises are no different from people who work close together in an office or with kids who play with each day at school. Always keep your hands washed, and when you have the opportunity, use disinfectant gel.

Daily Activities – When you participate in daily activities, shore excursions, dances and other events, you are more likely to meet other seniors who have similar interests. Get out and mingle and don’t waste your precious time in your cabin watching TV or reading a book. Get out, explore, and have fun during your cruise!

Bring Power Strips – Even though each cabin has wall outlets, you might find that there aren’t enough for additional electrical appliances that you might want to use. This is particularly useful when you have cameras and batteries to charge.

Choose Where You Want to Eat – Some cruise ships still have fixed seating rules, but most today will allow you to sit where you want, and eat in any restaurants you like aboard the ship. So, unless you want to be seated where someone else tells you, inquire about free dining arrangements.

More Than Beautiful Beaches – When some people imagine singles cruises over 50, they see open stretches of blue sea and endless sandy beaches. While beaches are an essential part of cruising, ships dock at many beautiful port cities around the world. Even if, you are not a beach fan, the biggest part of a cruise is exploring historical stops along the way, and shopping for souvenirs. There is usually always one or two hour tours scheduled at many of your stops, so you will always have something fun to participate in.

Singles Cruises over 50 – Conclusion

Singles cruises over 50 are an affordable way for seniors to meet and mingle with many people. Hardly any type of vacation can compare with the full service that senior citizens can get from a well organized cruise.

You can find senior cruises over 50 and many adult themed cruises today. Learn more about how the cruise industry is catering more to senior citizens, by ============>>> Checking This Out.

Churches Can Save Marriages

I’m going to tell you the story of Jack and Jill. (Not their real names, and they don’t live on a hill).

Churches Can Save Marriages

On our RV trip (fall-2015 to summer-2016) we visited the church Jack and Jill attend. After the service during a time of sharing, Jack seemed eager to be the first to speak. He said he wanted to let everyone know “we are back in one house” – which was well received. He said they had a long way to go, and asked for continued prayer. We later learned this couple had been living apart for some time while they both dealt with their own issues.

During our last trip around the country this spring and summer, we were close enough to Jack and Jill to go by and see them. We spent some time in their living room asking them about their experience. This was no recently wed couple – they had to be close to 20 years together. Some months before our first visit, their problems had reached a crisis point, and the church leadership stepped in to help. They found someone to take Jack in so the family wouldn’t take a financial hit from him having to get an apartment. They encouraged both spouses to get help, and did a good deal to point them in the right direction and provided some financial help.

The most radical thing they did was call the couple to the front during a service and tell the congregation of the temporary split and encourage prayers. I love this because it made it public and did a lot to limit gossip and speculation. It made a marriage in trouble something to fight for, and it set the expectation that it would work out.

Jack said he got calls from many married men in the church, offering prayers, moral support, and a willingness to spend time together. There was no shaming or cold shoulder, people cared and went out of their way to show they cared. Jill was treated the same way.

One thing that stood out to me was Jill said she really trusted the leadership of the church before all this happened. Jack felt similarly. They felt the leaders had spiritual authority in their lives and they trusted God to work through them. This allowed them to trust what was said and done by the leadership even when it felt difficult. In retrospect, they don’t feel everything that was done was perfect, but they see God’s hand in it.

Jack and Jill told us some of their individual problems that had contributed to the marriage difficulties, and how they had and were continuing to work on those things. Both understood how their spouse’s “stuff” had hurt the marriage, but each was focused on dealing with their own stuff and trusting their spouse to do the same. I know they were encouraged on this path by their church, and I know their church would speak up if they saw either become too focused on what the other was or wasn’t doing.

From where I sit, Jack and Jill are married and growing because of their church. In another church, the odds are they would be divorced or permanently separated. Their current situation shows divorce wasn’t inevitable for them.

I hope this story shows us all how powerful community and friendship can be. And, if you’re a leader in your church, I hope this inspires you and causes you to ask if your church could or would have done what was necessary to help this couple save their marriage.

6 Cancer Man Dating Tips

Any person born between June 22 and July 22 falls in the Cancer Zodiac sign. Some of the traits that define a Cancer man are loyalty, caring nature, dependable, responsive and adaptive. Some of his weaknesses include clinginess, moodiness, oversensitivity and self-pitying. Read on to find out some Cancer man dating tips.

The Cancer man requires a lady who will be there for him. This is the first dating tip to take into consideration if you are a Cancer. A Cancer man is not as independent; he is not emotionally strong and he will require a strong willed woman beside him in his life.

The second of the Cancer man dating tips is to get an understanding woman.

Since a Cancer man is fragile and unpredictable, he will need constant emotional support from his love. This is an important dating tip as a Cancer is very fragile emotionally and is prone to mood swings. Getting the right woman who understands this trait is important for the happiness of the Cancer man.

Also, another important aspect among the Cancer man dating tips is the need to find someone who cherishes you. Cancers like feeling appreciated and in they are also quick to return the favor. Given the known Cancer trait of being emotionally fragile, it is only good that your partner should be one who cherishes and appreciates that you are who you are.

When it comes to doing business, one of the Cancer man dating tips to keep in mind is that you are a natural provider and you are good at business and like being the provider. Therefore, it may be wise to stay away from women who will be competing with you in providing for the family. A Cancer man needs an obedient lady that he will provide for, not one that he will compete against.

Another of the Cancer man dating tips is to avoid relations that will stress you. Stressful situations are not good for the Cancer man as he is easily stressed and slight provocations may turn up to be major stresses. It is therefore recommended that you go out with fun loving women who will always keep you in a good light mood.

Finally, last among the Cancer man dating tips is to find a lady who is perseverant. With perseverance, the Cancer man and his woman have better chances of having a successful relationship in the long run.

With the above Cancer man dating tips, it should be easier for any Cancer man to select the right date for him. However, some basic points will apply regardless of what star you are. Also, some of the dating tips may be applicable to other stars.

Although a Cancer man is fragile emotionally or easily stressed, it is important to know that he is very perseverant and can emerge stronger from stressful situations. Whether the situations deal with career, business, family, friendship, health, and so on, the Cancer man can make the best out of them.

Why You Can No Longer Talk Politics At The Office

A number of recent surveys give reason for us all to be concerned about the impact that last year’s election and Trump’s presidency are having in the workplace.

A study by BetterWorks shows a marked decrease in productivity owing to the amount of time employees spend in political discussions on social media—while at work. In an American Psychological Association survey, nearly 10 percent of respondents said that talking politics at work led to stress, diminished productivity, and a greater sense of distrust toward colleagues of a different political persuasion.

There was a time—and it does not seem that long ago—when work colleagues could exchange friendly banter or make light-hearted remarks about politics shortly before and after a presidential election. That is no longer the case. Trump’s candidacy and election have brought to a peak a tendency that has been growing for some years: politics as a well-defined and all-consuming tribal conflict.

You cannot be a moderate or reluctant supporter of Trump: you are either in or out of the Trump camp. If you are out, then you must hate, despise, and have nothing but contempt for those that are in. People like to think that a middle ground can be found in every situation; we like to believe we can show some kindness and sympathy with people who we otherwise work well and get along with. But something has happened in the American psyche that now makes this impossible. A range of developments, which include the now rather cliché factors of media, social, and educational fragmentation, have given rise to the kind of politics that Trump practices with gusto. It is a politics of wild conspiracy, permanent outrage, perpetual derangement, and floating hostility.

You can no longer talk politics at the office because no one can really talk politics at all. We can only scream at each other, call each other names, impugn each other’s morality, character, patriotism, intelligence, and trustworthiness.

The state we’re now in began on the right, not the left. Ambitious right-wing politicians and media personalities decided it wasn’t enough to criticize and object to their left-wing opponents; they had to paint them as evil, menacing, irredeemably corrupted scoundrels who could never be trusted with the reins of power. And if you are on the receiving end of that kind of talk, you are left with little choice but to respond in kind. That, in short, is how we ended up in the never-ending cage match that is our current politics.

To be sure, democratic elections have always been about getting more people to hate one side than the other. This has been a discernable principle of politics since the time of the Ancient Greeks. The trouble with our current situation is that not since before the civil war has politics been so definitively and violently divided—and unavoidable as a topic of discussion in nearly every social setting.

It is impossible not to take a position on Trump and the GOP congress. Bigotries, against LGBT people in particular, that most of us thought were dead and buried are being brought up again, health care benefits which many people have come to depend on are being threatened, the most extreme policies on immigration are being proposed—these are not abstract issues that play at the margins of what is essentially centrist policy; they effect ordinary people in their everyday lives, which means they will be mentioned in any casual conversation, at work and elsewhere.

So it would seem that we can no longer talk politics without it devolving into an incoherent shouting match; nor can we avoid talking politics given the raging fever it has become since the 2016 election.

What to do?

As always, my advice is to confront the matter head on. You will look at your colleagues who do not share your politics with suspicion, you will find it impossible to be friends and even a challenge to be friendly with them; you might even be tempted to make business judgments based on the fact that you distrust them. It is best to acknowledge all this so that you can find ways to reflect on and overcome—that is, make fair-minded decisions related to their work and careers—the hardened feelings you have for those of your work mates who are on the other side of the political divide.

Do You Need Help To S ave Your Relationship?

When everything goes wrong in a relationship then both partners can suffer stress, and if you are both unable to resolve the issues that are leading to these problems then it may be sensible for you to seek outside and ask for help to save your relationship. What is important is understanding the reasons your relationship are undergoing these problems and both partners agreeing that it is time to look for solutions in any avenue open to them. It should also be a mutual decision to seek help when your hearts are crying out; save my relationship!
The pressures and stress of modern living may cause your relationship to suffer, and because of the different careers you may be both pursuing it could result in the two partners leading separate lives. Deep inside you know you are drifting apart, and in your mind you may be crying out; save my relationship before it reaches the point of no return. You may actually be surprised to discover that your soul mate or partner is feeling the same way but is too scared to bring the reality into the open. When you both agree that you have problems that need to be resolved, then the first step is attempting to work these out together, before letting anyone know you have problems that are crying out in panic in your minds – save my relationship!
The most powerful way of resolving problems and arguments is through two way communication. Keeping quiet about an issue that is troubling your relationship can lead to it festering into a bigger problem that may end up being far more difficult to resolve. If through discussion between yourselves does not result in clearing the air and coming to a point of compromise, then it is time to investigate other avenues to heal your relationship before it is past the point of no return.
You may discover that outside assistance from a counselor, family members, your community church, or close friends can give you new perspectives on your problems and help you realize what the correct solutions are. Getting advice from others that have nurtured long standing relationships themselves is certainly sensible, because more than likely they may have experienced similar issues in the past. However the wrong advice from inexperienced sources can result in your relationship being destroyed though so it means being careful who you deiced to approach.
Professional help from a relationship guidance counselor who you will ask for help to- save my relationship is probably the most sensible choice as long as both partners agree to attend sessions together. Invariably a relationship counselor will teach you both better communication skills, as well as show you different methods of handling similar problems and situations when they arise in the future.
Guidance Counseling, relationship seminars, and getaways for time out from the fast paces stressful lifestyles you lead, can mean the difference between saving a relationship and allowing it to crumble into dust. Your strong relationship that has survived trials and tribulations in turn, can help others when they come for advice and ask you; help me save my relationship, because then you will be able to provide solid advice and guidance that your relationship gained when you were facing problems.
Are you desperate to get back with your ex? The Magic of Making Up will give you the help you sorely need to win back an ex. The Magic of Making Up can jump-start your chances of saving your relationship and of getting your ex back.

Busyness: The New Status Symbol

Decades ago, success was measured by wealth and leisure. The number of vacations you took. Where you went. How you spent that time. The number of fancy cars inside your garage. The number of fancy things and rooms inside your home. These were the ultimate status symbols.

The more you relaxed, the more lavish your lifestyle, the more luxurious your getaways, the more you were seen as a highly successful somebody.

Today, however, success and status are measured by how busy you are. The busier, the better. So busy that you can’t take time off. So busy that you carry your laptop with you everywhere. So busy that you check email right before closing your eyes and right after opening them. So busy that you work right through the weekend. So busy there’s no time to call your mom let alone have lunch with her.

Today, we view busyness as a badge of honor. A badge that we show to everyone. How are you? Oh, busy! Soooo busy.

Why has busyness become a status symbol, a marker of success? Why does being busy matter so much to us?

The Pursuit of Self-Worth

“Being busy can imply that you are wanted, needed, valued and worthy,” said Christina Cruz, Psy.D, a life coach who specializes in perfectionism, anxiety, depression and body image.

It’s also how we “’prove’ that we are contributing to society, that we are a good person doing things for others, that we are a good person, worker, husband, wife, father, mother,” said Julie de Azevedo Hanks, Ph.D, LCSW, a psychotherapist and author of the book The Assertiveness Guide for Women: How to Communicate Your Needs, Set Healthy Boundaries, and Transform Your Relationships.

Hanks once worked with a client who had a hard time saying no to her family, to her church community and at work. She was regularly running on empty and felt resentful about all the tasks she had to do. “Her busyness was motivated by trying to prove her worth to her parents and to herself and by keeping others happy and avoiding others’ disappointment or criticism,” Hanks said. In therapy, they worked on setting boundaries and developing a sense of self outside of pleasing others. They also worked on cultivating self-care and identifying activities she actually wanted to do, instead of what others expected from her.

Many of us have been praised, rewarded and validated for our output since childhood, said Sally Nazari, Psy.D, a psychologist, owner of Chrysalis Psychological Services and the host of Beyond the Couch podcast. Maybe it was a gold star for doing something special. Maybe it was praise from your teacher for correctly answering a question. Maybe it was topping a class ranking. Whatever the specifics, “we received feedback for taking some kind of external action and producing something,” she said. This principle simply spills into adulthood with everything from quotas to commissions to bonuses at work, she said.

The busier we are, the worthier we assume it’ll make us. After all, “if we have more of the thing that has come to be rewarded, in this case busyness and a never-ending to-do list, the more valuable we are,” Nazari said.

Over time, we go from glamorizing and glorifying busyness to developing fears around it. “We begin to fear that if we don’t respond immediately to that overseas call, someone else will; that if we’re not available 24/7, our job security might be jeopardized,” said Barbara Sapienza, Ph.D, a retired psychologist and author of Anchor Out: A Novel. We also might fear that by taking a break from our to-do list, we run the risk of losing everything we’ve come to achieve, said Nazari.

Deeper Origins

Sometimes, it isn’t status or self-worth we’re seeking. Sometimes, “individual psychodynamic underpinnings can be operating,” Sapienza said. Maybe your need for busy stems from your inability to say no, which stems from trying to please your insecure mother. Maybe your need for busy stems from the desire to surpass your successful dad who was always unavailable.

We also might seek busyness as an escape, a diversion. “Many people who are feeling disconnected from their loved ones or even themselves look for an escape from those tough, unpleasant feelings in their to-do lists,” Nazari said.

“I have personally seen people use busyness as a coping mechanism because they have a difficult time being with themselves, don’t want to face past trauma, or use busyness to escape dealing with relationships,” Cruz said.

When you’re going non-stop, you conveniently don’t have time to tune into your feelings. Which is something we’re actually taught in childhood—if we’re upset or crying, it’s comforting to distract ourselves, Nazari said (something many, many parents do to ease their kids’ pain).

The Problem with Busy

So what’s the big deal with valuing busyness? What’s so problematic?

For starters, as Nazari said, “If we value ourselves based on our tasks, accomplishments, and gains, we begin to think of ourselves as less and less worthwhile just for being ourselves.” So we take on more projects and more tasks, and eventually we burn out.

We have less energy to devote to our relationships, she said. Which creates distance and disconnection. And “The quality of relationships determines the quality of our life,” Hanks said.

Also, “It is difficult to truly feel satisfied and content with life when you are constantly on the move,” Cruz said.

Finding Freedom

According to Sapienza, “freedom comes with having some space.” If you’re finding yourself shackled to the idea that busyness is vital, consider these suggestions:

  • Identify what you really mean. According to Hanks, when you say, “I’m busy,” what are you really saying? After all, busyness can have many different meanings. I’m so busy can mean “I’m so overwhelmed,” “I’m so important,” “I work harder than you do,” or “I wish I had time off,” she said. If you tell someone else, “You’re so busy,” maybe you’re really saying, “I don’t think you have time for me,” “I miss you,” “I admire all that you accomplish” or “I feel bad that I’m not as productive as you are,” she said.
  • Explore your busyness. Cruz also suggested taking a deeper look into your busyness by contemplating these questions: “What do you think being busy says about you? Do you use busyness to avoid something or someone in your life? (If you do, these tips can help.) How does busyness get in your way?”
  • Schedule tiny breaks to switch gears. Nazari helps her clients switch gears from their go-go-go lifestyles by doing something completely unrelated to the tasks on their to-do lists. She shared this example: Plan a 3-minute phone call to a loved one during your weekday commute. (Of course, make it a longer conversation if you like.) What tiny but meaningful breaks can you take throughout the day?
  • Re-evaluate your time regularly. Nazari suggested setting an alarm on your phone to go off every few hours. When it does, ask these two questions: “Did what I just spent the last hour doing contribute to enriching my life? How has what I just spent the last hour doing contribute to the relationships in my life?” “These reminders cue us to consider where our energies are directed and pull us out of that frenzied mindset of busyness to consider where we do want our investments to be in our lives,” Nazari said.
  • Feed your well. According to Sapienza, ask yourself: “What feeds my well so I don’t become depleted?” These are activities that “cultivate joy and nourish our hearts and minds.” Which might be anything from evening dinners with family to lunch with friends to surfing to participating in team sports. Or it might be more contemplative experiences, such as writing, reading poetry, hiking and sitting in stillness, she said.

In our society busyness is best. Which can make it harder to change our perspective, and relinquish busyness as a lifestyle to admire and pursue. But the more we move without stopping, the more we pack our schedules with superficial things, the less beauty we truly savor, and the more we disconnect from our loved ones and ourselves. Sometimes, our pursuit of busyness masks something deeper. Take the time to explore what busyness means to you—and what you really want your life to look and feel like.

Ways To Organize The Best Cruises For Singles Over 50

The best cruises for singles over 50 can be found by seniors who have never taken a cruise before, and also by seasoned travelers. Many seniors are delighted about the idea of taking a cruise. However, they are a little hesitant about going as a single.

After all, most tours are advertised for honeymoons, children, or other couples. Single cruises don’t seem to get the same amount of publicity. If most senior citizens are going to invest the money for a single cruise, they need to be assured that the cruise will be worth their while.

Nothing is guaranteed in this life, and no one can say for sure that the next cruise you book will be your favorite trip of all time. Yet, there are certain actions that you can take to ensure that your cruise won’t go sour.

Before seniors do anything to organize the best cruises for singles over 50, they should do their research. Those who pay more and still do not have the best experience are those who don’t take the time to investigate the numerous offers that are available.

Best Cruises for Singles over 50 – 3 Steps That Senior Citizens Should Take

Below are three essential steps that you should take to find the best cruises for singles over 50:

Find a Destination – Start by picking a destination. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of locations that you can choose from. From the Caribbean to South East Asia, there are many choices.

What is it that you want to see? Some cruises take you to locations that feature cascading waterfalls and mountains. It’s even possible to find the best cruises for singles over 50 in places where you can see icebergs and polar bears, or witness a school of dolphins escorting the ship through Caribbean islands.

If you prefer shopping, then you should choose a cruise that docks at locations where you can buy special types of clothes, accessories, and souvenirs. If you are into snorkeling, you should check to make sure your cruise ship goes where there are beautiful reefs to explore during your stop.

Choose a Cruise Line – Selecting the right cruise line is also an important part of locating the best cruises for singles over 50. For most seniors, it comes down to availability, what each company has to offer, and their budgets. Major companies, such as Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity have many ships. They often have certain ships that are used for special cruises for singles and adults.

You will want to find a cruise ship that is friendly to seniors and singles. Are you more interested in gambling and night shows, or were you looking for something that is quiet and romantic? These are things that will help weigh your decision.

Set Your Cruise Date – Once you know your cruise line and destination, the next important part is choosing a date for your trip. You should remember that if you are booking during the offseason, you are going to save money. In addition, your ship might not be as crowded as during high season, and prices will also probably be lower at the ports you visit because they are anxious for your business.

Check with an online travel agency or with local travel agencies in your city. Always compare prices and never jump at the first quote that sounds reasonable, because you might be able to save more money with another cruise line or agency.

Cruises for Singles over 50 – Once You Are Onboard

Many might not know it, but there are a lot of activities and entertainment on ships that are already focused on senior citizens. That’s because there is already a lot of seniors who take a couple of cruises every year. You can be assured that you will find casual and formal events where you can mingle with others if you are single. Each day, the cabins have a calendar of events for the day, so you will know what is going on. It’s very easy to plan each day aboard ship, and do as much or little as you please.

Cruises for Singles over 50 – Conclusion

While looking for cruises for singles over 50, it pays to do your research. Never feel pressured to book any tours if you are not ready. Take your time and enjoy your next cruise.

15 Signs of a Verbally Abusive Relationship: Set Yourself Free

There are far too many people who end up in a verbally abusive relationship and don’t even know it. Here are all the signs and how you can get away.

Nobody deserves to be in a verbally abusive relationship. Not only do they take a toll on you mentally, but they put you in a dangerous mindset that can derail other things in your life. The worst part about these types of relationships is that most people have no idea they’re in them.

I know you may be thinking that you’d probably know if you were being verbally abused, but sometimes the manipulation is so strong that you just don’t see it. The abuse can seem subtle but the effects will be harmful and lasting.

The long-term effects of verbal abuse can be extensive

There are a lot of people who don’t think verbal abuse is even that harmful. They figure that a person can just ignore harmful comments, but that’s simply not true. When someone is verbally abusive, they’re emotionally damaging the other person.

This isn’t a matter of, “Sticks and stones may break your bones but words can never hurt you.” Words hurt people in the most severe way. They harm their psyche. Those words leave lasting scars on a person’s mental health that can sometimes never heal. [Read: 21 big signs of emotional abuse you may be overlooking]

Knowing the signs of a verbally abusive relationship can help put an end to it

No one should ever have to live with being verbally abused. But if they don’t know it’s happening to them, how can they end it? Here are the signs of a verbally abusive relationship to keep an eye out for not only for yourself, but for the important people in your life. Once you know the signs, you can put an end to the abuse for good.

#1 Obvious insults. A verbally abusive partner will make clear insults. You won’t have to guess if it’s an insult because it’ll feel like a punch to the gut – from someone you care about. Anything like, “Why are you so stupid?” is a clear sign of a verbally abusive relationship and you shouldn’t put up with it. [Read: 33 creative insults to insult someone with sarcasm]

#2 Backhanded insults. These are the types of insults that’ll be a little harder to pinpoint. Basically, they’ll be comments that you’ll end up thinking about later in the day and you’ll get upset about them.

Your partner may say something like, “great to see you’re finally taking care of yourself,” after you just returned from the gym. These might seem like compliments, but they’re clearly meant as a negative.

#3 Manipulation. Any form of manipulation is abuse in a relationship. The thing about this is that it’s the hardest to figure out. It’s not easy to spot because you’re being manipulated to not see it. If your partner is saying anything like, “Wow, you really seem to like those shoes. Wouldn’t you rather wear them less so they don’t get worn out?” it’s manipulation.

When they try to get you to do something for them while trying to make you think it’s a good idea for you, it’s manipulation and it’s wrong. [Read: 12 subtle signs you’re being manipulated in your relationship]

#4 Making fun of your beliefs, hobbies, etc. There are so many people who do this to their partner and it’s really, really harmful. Your significant other should never put down the things that make you who you are. If they’re “poking fun” at your hobbies and beliefs, it’s verbal abuse.

#5 Negative comments about a group you belong to. This can be a wide variety of things specifically like race, religious, groups, and more. The thing that makes this less obvious is when they add, “But I don’t mean that about you.” However, they do mean it about you and it’ll resonate in your mind in that way.

#6 Negative comments about stuff or people you love. This is most commonly seen when your partner is talking about your family or some object that means a lot to you. If they make any negative comments about stuff that means a lot to you, it’s verbal abuse. [Read: How to deal with negative people in your life]

#7 Indirect comments that make you feel stupid or inadequate. If you walk away from a conversation with your significant other and feel stupid and inadequate, then they’re verbally abusing you with what they say. You should never feel this way and if they make you, it’s abuse.

#8 You feel nervous when entering a discussion. This is most common after someone has been in a verbally abusive relationship for a long time. They just don’t realize it. If you never want to get into discussions or arguments, it’s abuse.

#9 Your side of an argument is never addressed. When you do get into heated discussions and fights and your side is never addressed, it’s abuse. Usually, you don’t even get the chance to defend yourself because your partner is shutting down your thoughts with their harmful words. Then you give up. It’s verbal abuse if this is happening. [Read: 23 dos and don’ts to remember in relationship arguments]

#10 Your self-esteem is significantly lower than when you started dating. Access how you feel about yourself versus how you felt in the beginning of your relationship. Are you more skittish around them? Do you hold your tongue when you have an opinion? If that’s the case, you’ve been verbally abused for a while.

How to get out of a verbally abusive relationship

Nobody should stay with a person who is verbally abusing them. Not only are they being abusive, they’re harming the other’s mental health and well-being. If you realized – after reading the above signs – that you’re in a relationship like this, here’s how you can get out. [Read: How to get out of an abusive relationship with a step-by-step guide]

#1 Confide in someone you can trust. Go to a close friend or family member who will support you. This is not an easy process and having someone be there every step of the way will give you the confidence you need to pack your bags and get out.

#2 Discuss it with the abuser. Sit your partner down and have a lengthy, firm discussion with them. Sometimes, the abuser is unaware of the negative effects of their comments. Truthfully, that’s absolutely no excuse.

So sit them down and talk about how they make you feel with their horrible comments toward you. If they refuse to hear you out, leave them for good.

#3 Seek professional help if you don’t want to leave. This is only ever okay if you’re married and have a family. Otherwise, there is absolutely no reason to stay with the person who is ruining your self-esteem and mental health.

A professional can help the two of you talk through the issue in a safe and controlled environment. You’ll get to say your part and they’ll be forced to actually listen for once. [Read: 16 signs it’s time to move on and end the relationship]

#4 Be honest with yourself about their ability to change. Sit yourself down and be honest. Will they really change and stop the verbal abuse? If you can’t see that end, then you should do yourself a favor and leave them.

#5 Leave and cut off all communication. This will be hard. Many people are in a verbally abusive relationship because they’re not the type to stand up for themselves. That’s how their partner was able to take over and act this way in the first place.

And that’s okay. Not everyone has a dominant, aggressive personality. But you need to pick yourself up and leave. Cut off every form of communication possible. Change your number if you have to.

If you ever fear that a confrontation or your leaving may result in any other form of abuse, including physical or sexual, please bring a family member with you and call an abuse helpline.

[Read: 15 signs of an emotionally abusive relationship you can’t miss]

Being in a verbally abusive relationship isn’t good for anyone. If you’re able to spot the signs, you should get out of that relationship and save yourself some hardships.

Why You Are NOT An Anti-Muslim Bigot

Hate comes in many forms. There is race hate, religious hate, gender hate, and LGBT hate. People are right to condemn it when they see it. But some people extend such objections to realms of inquiry and debate in which they have no place.

The most prominent and worrying example of this phenomenon is the current practice of accusing anyone who says anything against conservative interpretations and practices of Islam of anti-Muslim bigotry. This mad McCarthyite fever that has gripped significant parts of the left has led the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of America’s premiere anti-racist groups, to add ex-Muslim Ayaan Hirsi Ali and liberal Muslim Maajid Nawaz to its list of anti-Muslim extremists.

For the life of me I cannot follow the logic of the SPLC and those who share their position. Their argument seems to be that liberal and atheistic cultural Muslims and secularists, free-thinkers, agnostics, and atheists of every other ethnic background have no right to examine, criticize, object to, or in any way publically oppose the teachings, doctrines, and conventions of Islam. To do so is to denigrate the religion and all those who adhere to it, which, so they would have us believe, amounts to racism and intolerance.

Now if your thinking is anywhere near my own then you support the right of people to worship as they choose; and you are against the singling out of Muslims for harassment, abuse, and other forms of unfair treatment based solely on their religion. But you also demand the right to express your conviction that there is no good reason to believe in the teachings of Islam, just as there is no reason to believe in the veracity of any other religion.

Quarrelling with a religion as a body of ideas is not even next door to hating the people who adhere to it. My entire family is Christian—deeply committed evangelicals. I do not hold with their views. There is much in Christianity that to my mind outrages morality and sound thinking. I hate the religion; it does not follow that I hate my family.

Surely the same thing can be said about a non-believer’s view of Islam. It is the ideology that is unacceptable, not the people who follow it. And the only way forward with such disagreements is to engage in open, honest, clear headed debate about the ideas. Indeed, that is all we’re dealing with here: ideas, beliefs, claims, and presuppositions—no different, in principle, than if the subject were communism versus capitalism or modernism versus postmodernism.

So why are so many people on the left willing to label anyone who says a word against Islam an anti-Muslim bigot?

There are a couple of things to say about this. First, I don’t believe that most leftists—even those working at think tanks and working as bloggers and newspaper columnists—believe all critics of Islam, especially their fellow progressives, are anti-Muslim bigots. The legitimate intellectual distinction of presenting arguments against an ideology and expressing hateful comments about the people who follow it is too obvious for any sane and honest mind to deny. Second, while there is a hardened core that will react unreasonably to criticism of Islam, most leftists do not fly off the handle. They instead act in ways that suggest they would rather the subject went away.

It occurs to me that most people on the left are uncomfortable discussing Islam. They may be doubters, agnostics, or non-believers themselves, but they don’t want to do anything to upset anyone in the Muslim community. They do all that they can to separate religion from all violent and anachronistic acts; they think it unnecessary and unfair to investigate any possible links between religious teachings and murder, rape, and misogyny: thus the inevitable trending of the “Terrorism has no religion” hashtag on Twitter after every incident of Islamist violence.

The trouble with this approach is that it runs up against the fact that Islam, like Christianity and Judaism, is now a significant social and cultural force in America and throughout the West. It is impossible to simply ignore the fundamental beliefs and convictions of millions of our fellow citizens in the hope that everything will turn out alright in the end.

Islam has become too big and too important to ignore or avoid as a subject of intellectual inquiry. Its tenets must be analyzed and challenged. As a freethinker, it is both your right and duty to do so. That makes you an honest and inquiring mind, not an anti-Muslim bigot.

Dating Advice: Why Are You So Nervous?

You do not need any dating advice to know that we live in a time where there are more new avenues and opportunities available than at any other time in history.

Thanks to the changing attitudes concerning the relationship between men and women, dating has entered a whole new realm. Factor in some of the newer innovations like internet and speed dating and it becomes clear the possibilities seem almost endless.
But times cannot change what many of us feel before, during and after a date. In spite of knowing the other person for quite some time, being comfortable with them in a different environment and getting an enthusiastic yes when you ask them for a date, it still does not stop your nerves from giving you plenty of grief.

A big part of being nervous is of course you want the date to go right. Carefully planning a date and then watching it fall apart before your eyes is a nightmare we all dread. No question if you have ever experienced this, there is a little voice of doubt saying, “Here we go again.” Another reason however is confidence. You may not have experienced a bad date or this may even be your first date but you still feel shaky. For some reason it always seems like the equivalent of having to do a public speaking engagement in front of a tough audience.

It is not to that extreme but it can feel like you are auditioning and in a way you are. You are selling the product known as you and hope the prospective buyer (your date) like what they see and hear. If not then you have to deal with rejection which is a bitter pill to swallow. Everyone wants to be accepted on some level. When you open up to someone and they say no then it can make you nervous about doing it again. No is a simple word that packs a terrific punch that can shake anyone to the core.

So what’s the alternative? Not to date anyone and in the long run that’s far worst. Never giving a relationship a chance because your nerves just could not stand anything unconstructive can do more damage than experiencing rejection. No matter how bad the rejection, you can always move forward with your life. Rejection means they have missed out on the opportunity to know more about wonderful you.

Your date is not on a pedestal. You do not have to grovel before them in the hopes they accept you. It is all about give and take and realizing both of you are on the same level. Be confident in what you have to offer the other person. If they accept, then that is something to build on, if not then wish them well and keep looking for the person that is more in tune to your frequency; they do exist.

Japan Singles: Dating Tips for Senior Citizens

Japan has the highest life expectancy in the world, which was as high as 86.1 years for women and 79.0 years for men in 2010, according to the United Nations. Therefore, you are never too old to fall in love. However, senior Japan singles are faced with several challenges when it comes to the game of dating. For them, it’s not as easy as going to a party or a bar to pick up a date. Don’t be disheartened though and take solace in the fact that you are not alone. In fact, the desire for companionship drives thousands of senior Japan singles to pursue partners online these days.

Japan Singles: Advice for Senior Dating

The biggest advantage of senior dating is that you needn’t bother with the anticipation and anxiety that plagues relationships among people in their 20s or 30s. Therefore, you can forget all the mind games and enjoy your date without any hidden agendas. Here are some tips that will enable you to enjoy your dates with senior Japan singles:

Be honest about who you are and what you do. Do not even think of lying about your age.

Note the things that you can offer in a new relationship. This will definitely boost your confidence and help you be at your best on your date.

Think about the qualities you seek in your new partner. Do not search for a replacement or imitation of your previous partner.

Flaunt your sense of humor in a subtle manner. The ability to keep things light is appreciated by Japan singles of both the sexes.

Japan Singles: Planning the First Date

The first date can be nerve-wracking for anyone. And, if you are a senior citizen who has newly re-entered the dating scene, things like what to wear, where to go and what to talk about can seem insurmountable. To make a lasting first impression on Japan singles, keep the following things in mind:

Try to incorporate a common interest or even a shared value in the date. This can help to establish an immediate connection.
For the first date, lunch is a better alternative to dinner as the later implies more intimacy, which you may not be ready for.
Stick to public places. A home-cooked meal on the first date is a no-no.

Finally, remember that if the Japan singles you date do not turn out to be Prince/Princess Charming, it’s OK. At the end of the day, even if the date didn’t work out, you’ve met a new person and practiced your conversation skills. You will definitely be better prepared for your next date.
